Turn Another Page Service Description

This is a detailed and technical summary of the service we offer. For the purposes of this document please take "books" to mean all the types of publication that you can purchase through Turn Another Page.

Turn Another Page is a service designed to allow independent authors and small-press publishers to sell their work online. We operatea as an agent, taking a 15% commission of all sales. The payment provider also takes a share, everything else goes to the publisher.

There are three types of user on the site:

Visitors
Visitors are users who have not logged in and are functionally anonymous. They can browse and search for books, publishers and authors and place books in their basket, but they will need an account to be able to purchase them.
Readers
Readers are users who have logged in to their Turn Another Page account. They can purchase books, access any digital books that they have purchased and download them from the site. They can also create a public profile to share what they are reading, write reviews and rate books from their library. They are bound by our Reader Policies.
Publishers
Publishers are users who are using their account to sell books. They can create author profiles, create books, create sequences, upload artwork for books, create editions for books they have created, upload content files for digital editions, and submit them for sale. Publishers are responsible for ensuring any physical orders are fulfilled and will be notified of incoming orders to that end. They are bound by our Publisher Policies.

Anyone is welcome to open a reader account on the platform unless they have previously had an account cancelled. Publisher accounts will initially be limited by invite as a way for us to manage our growth rate - if you are publisher wanting to get involved set up a reader account and contact us.

Books you have purchased are delivered DRM-free and you can download them as soon as they have been added to your library. Our goal is to retain them in your library for as long as you have the account, but if a publisher seeks to withdraw them altogether they will cease to be available for future download. Consequently we recommend downloading your books as soon as you have purchased them.

Regions

Although the site is available globally, sales are currently restricted to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Over time we hope to be able to offer our service in more countries. We do not perform any third-party analysis on your data, which means that visitors may see books listed that are not available in their region. Once a user has logged in, we will limit listings to books available in your region and show prices in the correct currency. If we list books that are not available in your region it is probably due to a legal restriction, or because of delivery issues for physical goods, - the publisher may be able to tell you more.

Payment

We use PayPal as a payment partner because they are able to facilitate transactions between users in different countries. All orders go through PayPal and Publishers need to have a PayPal account to be able to sell through the platform.

File formats

For digital books we favour the .EPUB and .MOBI formats, which are broadly compatible with e-readers. For layout-intensive designs we recommend PDF and for comics we favour the .CBZ format. For Audiobooks we favour the .MP3 format as it is widely compatible and easy to play.

Relationship between publishers, authors and books

The logical structure of the relationship between a publisher and books is as follows:

  • A Publisher has one or more Authors.
  • An Author has one or more Books.
  • A Book has one or more Editions.
  • A digital Edition has one or more associated files.
  • A physical Edition has no associated files.

In order for a book to be listed on the site it must have at least one edition, that edition must have any necessary files uploaded, and it must have been accepted for listing by Turn Another Page.

Publishers are able to create special offers, and to invite other publishers to take part in them. An individual, published, book can only be part of a single special offer at any given time. A book that has been part of a special offer cannot be added to another special offer for some time after the offer ends. Offers can be adjusted until the offer begins - once a special offer goes live it cannot be changed. Although we endeavour to notify publishers that they have been invited to join an offer, we recommend contacting them directly through other channels.
